Mr. Augustyn is active in all facets of patent litigation, client counseling, and prosecution for over 25 years. He manages the patent prosecution for several international corporations. He has prepared or supervised the preparation of over 1000 originally-written US patent applications and the prosecution of several thousand US and non-US applications. He has been lead counsel or co-counsel in over 15 patent and trade secret litigations in several industries. Furthermore, he has extensive experience in the drafting and negotiation of agreements relating to intellectual property, including patent licenses, technology licenses, and R & D agreements.

Mr. Augustyn has authored articles and chapters for books, has appeared on television and radio, and has presented over 20 CLE programs. He received a B.S. in Engineering, with honors, from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and a J.D. degree from Loyola University Chicago, where he graduated at the top 10% of his class. In law school, he received several awards for scholarship and writing, and was on the National Moot Court Team.

Mr. Augustyn was an adjunct professor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law for over five years. In addition, he was the advisor of the Intellectual Property Moot Court Team at Loyola University Chicago for over fifteen years. He is also a guest instructor at Northwestern University School of Law. Prior to attending law school, he worked as an engineer at a large equipment manufacturer in the areas of Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Quality Engineering. He is also an inventor on two different patent families. Mr. Augustyn has received several legal awards, including Super Lawyer, Top Rated Lawyer, and Leading Lawyer.

John, a senior partner at Merchant & Gould, practices patent law with an emphasis on client counseling.  His practice includes the strategic and practical development and use of patent portfolios, licensing, due diligence studies, and infringement and validity investigations. John currently serves as Co-Chair of the firm’s Technology Committee, and is a past Chair of its Electronics and Computer Law Practice Section.  He also has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota Law School.  Before practicing law, John worked as an engineer in the automotive and telecommunications industries.

Paul Gurzo is a patent attorney with almost 15 years of experience in client counseling and preparing and prosecuting patent applications. He handles domestic and foreign patent applications at all stages of prosecution. His practice focuses on electrical and electromechanical technologies, including telecommunications, computer hardware and software, computer networking, optical systems, Internet-related systems, and business methods.  Paul has extensive experience preparing all types of opinions involving diverse technologies as well as performing portfolio analysis and counseling clients with respect to building their portfolios.  

Paul started his patent career as a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he worked in an electrical practice group. Paul also worked as an associate at the law firm of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, where he counseled clients, both domestic and foreign, and specialized in patent preparation and prosecution.
