NEW YORK CLE REQUIREMENTS
Whether you’re an experienced or newly admitted New York attorney, here’s what you need to be in the know about the NY CLE rules and how to get your New York CLE Requirements fulfilled with a Knowledge Group CLE Bundle.
New York CLE Requirements: All attorneys admitted to practice in New York shall complete twenty-four (24) credit hours of continuing legal education including at least four (4) credit hours of ethics and professionalism. Effective January 1, 2018, experienced attorneys must complete at least one (1) credit hour of diversity, inclusion and elimination of bias.
Compliance Deadline: 30 days after the attorney’s birthday in alternate years
Reporting Deadline: 30 days after the attorney’s birthday in alternate years
Compliance Cycle: Biennial
Approval of Programs: The Knowledge Group does not submit application for CLE credits in New York. TKG LIVE Webcasts are approved for CLE credit under New York’s Approved Jurisdiction policy. The Knowledge Group is an approved sponsor in the state of California, a New York Approved Jurisdiction. New York CLE Program Format: The Knowledge Group webcasts fulfill the non-traditional format requirement in New York. Effective November 1, 2014, Under New York’s Approved Jurisdiction policy, so long as certain requirements are satisfied, New York attorneys may count towards their New York CLE requirement credit earned through participation in out-of-state courses accredited by a New York Approved Jurisdiction. NY CLE Reporting Procedure: The Knowledge Group does not report attendance in New York. The attorney should simply include credits earned via Knowledge Group webcasts when computing the total number of CLE credits completed, and keep the Knowledge Group Certificate of Attendance for a period of at least four (4) years in case of audit. An attorney may count towards his/her New York CLE requirement credit earned through the Approved Jurisdiction policy without notifying the CLE Board.
For Newly Admitted Attorneys
New York CLE Requirements For Newly Admitted Attorneys: Newly admitted attorneys in the state of New York shall complete a minimum of thirty-two (32) credit hours of accredited transitional education within the first two (2) years of the date of admission to the Bar. Sixteen (16) accredited hours shall be completed in each of the first two (2) years of admission to the Bar as follows:
- Three (3) hours of ethics and professionalism;
- Six (6) hours of skills; and
- Seven (7) hours of law practice management
Newly admitted attorneys must fulfill their CLE requirement in live, traditional classroom settings or by attendance at fully interactive videoconferences that have been pre-approved by the NY CLE Board.
